Protect Your Credit
The big day finally arrives and you receive your credit card in the mail. The first thing you should do is sign it so that no one else can use it. There is often a number you must dial to activate the card. An operator or computer will ask you for information that only you would know. This is one more layer of protection to keep someone from pilfering your mailbox then charging up your card.
Be sure to read the papers that come with the credit card as these written terms are what legally govern its use. Then file the information in a safe place as it will contain important information on what to do if your card is ever lost or stolen or you need to verify the terms of the card use. Do not write passwords or access information on these papers as it would be to easy for a burglar to use this information to abuse your card.
Keep all of your credit card account information confidential. Don't share your card or any access number for your account with anyone. Don't give out your account number over the phone or internet unless you are positive of the identity of the person you are giving it to; for example if you are ordering something from a reputable company.
If you receive an email or phone call asking you to verify your account information you should report this to your credit card company. They would never request such information as they are interested in protecting your identity and your account. These scams are known as phishing. They are fishing for information with which to rip you off. Just don't do it.
When you use your credit card, keep the receipt and compare it with your statement when it comes in. Make sure there are no errors on your billing statement. If you discover a discrepancy report it to your credit card company in writing immediately.
